Parks – My Most Valuable Tips

Top Tips for Safe Playground Construction

When it comes to thinking family friendly fun, there are few places that come to mind more often than the playground. Playgrounds are great investments, whether they are personal investments for backyard fun, or community investments in city parks. Of course, deciding upon the type of playground you want to install and the features that need to be included is a fun job, but it’s important to keep safety at the forefront of your mind. There are several very important things to remember about creating a safe playground.

The first thing to keep in mind is just how safe the structure of the playground and the layout is for those that will play on it. Two of the most overlooked areas on play equipment are openings and sharp corners. Whatever toys or structures you choose, you need to make sure that the gaps between pieces are not too small, where a child could get stuck, or too large where children could easily fall out. Obviously, sharp corners can be a big hazard, whether it’s for eyes or bruising of the extremities, so it’s important to inspect any playground equipment and make sure that all sharp corners have been rounded down.

One of the most important features to consider for your playground is the ground surface that you will choose to put under the play equipment. Cement, and even just dirt or grass, are not sufficient when it comes to a surface that is safe in an area with a high fall risk. Another choice for safe playground surfacing is rubber mulch, but that comes with it’s own difficulties such as tripping, and can still be thrown about. One of the great inventions in playground safety is pourable rubber playground surfaces. Because it is poured, it is in a straight and even line. By using these types of surfacing, you’re making sure to minimize any injuries that can occur from falling off or around the playground structure.
Why No One Talks About Parks Anymore

The last component is related to surfacing, but it is that the amount of surfacing is sufficient for your playground. To be as safe as possible, there needs to be sufficient and safe playground surfacing under all of the play structure, including things that typically stand alone, like swings. The height of a tall adult is about how far a safe surface should go around the playground. Make especially sure that when surfacing the swings that you are doing the surface far enough out, in case a child falls or jumps off the moving swings.
Lessons Learned About Resources

In order for playgrounds to be all the fun they are meant to be, it’s important to insure the safety of the children and parents that utilize them. Just keep a few important things in mind, like gaps, corners, and rubber surfacing, and you should be good to go on the safety front.
