Leonard Wang is functioning for the Board of Governors (Bathroom) to function towards expanding UBC’s worldwide track record, strengthening undergraduate ordeals and selling fairness, variety and inclusion.

The fifth-12 months organization and computer science scholar explained his earlier experience as the 2021/22 president of the Computer Science Learners Affiliation and the 2021/22 Sauder college student senator on the UBC Vancouver Senate ready him to be a governor.

“All these experiences truly taught me how to communicate successfully,” Wang stated.

Although on Senate, Wang served on the Curriculum Committee and Committee on College student Appeals on Tutorial Self-discipline. He reported his expertise on the Curriculum Committee permitted him to find out how to “improve pupil experiences” when it arrived to “making modifications to the curriculum.” He did not specify what these modifications were.

He also explained he advocated for COVID-19 rapid tests on campus.

Wang desired to run for Bog due to the fact he wishes to be involved in strategic final decision-generating. “I really like the college, and I was thinking what contributions could I make just before I go,” explained Wang. “I think this is one particular of the finest methods.”

He reported a problem he might experience is balancing his Bathroom appointment with classes. But given his past knowledge, Wang explained he is self-assured he will do well.

When requested about his predecessors Georgia Yee and Max Holmes, Wang said he agrees with what they advocated for but disagreed with Yee and Holmes’s function from tuition will increase.

“Tuition is a extremely sophisticated problem,” explained Wang. He explained he supported tuition freezes throughout the COVID-19 pandemic since “people are struggling.” But, transferring ahead, Wang reported he would advocate for incremental tuition raises.

In December 2022, Bog authorized a 2 for each cent for domestic learners, 3 per cent for returning worldwide college students and 5 for every cent for incoming worldwide pupils, right after 92 percent of pupils mentioned they opposed the proposed tuition improve according to UBC’s once-a-year tuition engagement survey.

Six for each cent of pupils claimed they agreed with the raise, though two per cent were being doubtful.

“We do not want to just boost tuition unreasonably. [We need to] do student consultations and do them at a slower, steadier speed,” explained Wang. “Just make confident that we are striking a balance concerning increasing the college with a money but at the very same time, not putting way too lots of college students into monetary pressure.”

He did not specify what he intended by a steadier rate.

Wang also claimed he would like to serve on the Finance Committee.

When it will come to outreach, Wang spoke about “leveraging social media platforms” to have interaction with college students and growing the number of consultations finished by the Lavatory.

Wang did not show up at both prospect debate as he is undertaking an internship based outside of Vancouver.
